Keep Your Smile Bright: Caring For Your New Porcelain Veneers

Whether you’re just interested in veneers, or you’ve already received this cosmetic treatment, you may be wondering how to care for them properly and ensure that they remain bright, shiny, and beautiful for years to come. The team at Dreier Family Dental wants to offer a few tips to keep your veneers looking great:

Brush And Floss Regularly

Your veneers will look and feel just like natural teeth, which means they require the same level of care and attention as the rest of your smile. You don’t need to do anything special to clean your veneers. Just brush regularly, for two minutes per day, at least 2-3 times per day. You should also be flossing at least once per day.

Be Careful When You’re Flossing

Porcelain veneers are very durable, but if they’re exposed to excessive force when flossing, they could chip or crack. Pulling too hard on a piece of dental floss can put a lot of pressure on your veneer, and cause it to become damaged. It’s best to consult with a dentist like Dr. Dreier, Dr. Winter, or Dr. Jim before flossing, to make sure you use the proper technique and do not accidentally damage a veneer.

Don’t Chew Non-Food Items

Chewing non-food items is a bad habit whether you have veneers or not. It can cause wear to your natural tooth enamel, and to the porcelain of your veneers. Don’t chew on pens, bite your nails, or use your teeth as “tools” to open a bag of chips or other containers. Protect your investment in veneers by keeping inedible, non-food items out of your mouth.

Avoid Stains

Porcelain veneers cannot be stained, but the surrounding tooth structure can, which can cause aesthetic issues with your veneers. Some drinks like coffee, red wine, tea, and soda can stain the edge of your veneers, where they meet your teeth if consumed excessively. Smoking will also cause staining.

Make sure to rinse your mouth and brush after drinking darkly-colored beverages that could stain. We also highly recommend that you quit smoking to help protect your new smile.

Schedule Regular 6-Month Exams And Cleanings

Seeing Dr. Dreier, Dr. Connie or Dr. Jim Winter is the best way to make sure that your veneers and the underlying tooth structure are healthy and in good condition, and to have your teeth buffed, polished and cleaned.
